2017 looks like it will be a fantastic year for video games, with several high-profile titles already slated for release.
Here are five of the most anticipated games of 2017:
5. Persona 5
The Persona series began as a spin-off of Atlusís Shin Megami Tensei series, and since then, it has become one of the most popular RPG series. After a successful release in Japan last year, Persona 5 will finally be released in the West on April 4 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.
It follows a group of students who become vigilantes known as the “Phantom Thieves of the Heart” They steal ill intent from the hearts of adults while traveling through a supernatural realm known as the Palace, and they can summon their own inner psyches in the form of Personas.
Persona 5’s gameplay is split between the real world and the Palace, and it will feature both turn-based combat and an evolved Social Link system. Fans of the Persona series and turn-based RPGs in general shouldn’t miss out on this one.
4. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Meanwhile, horror fans are eagerly awaiting Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which will be available on January 24 for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Recent entries in the Resident Evil series have met with mixed reception, especially due to the shift toward action-focused gameplay. While Resident Evil 7 also looks like a departure for the series, with new characters and a first-person perspective, Capcom promises this will be a true return to horror.
It is supposed to feature limited combat, resource management, and puzzles, just like classic Resident Evil games. Meanwhile, it stars a man named Ethan searching for his missing wife, but there will be connections to previous games in the series. Will Resident Evil 7: Biohazard be the revival the Resident Evil series needs? Fans are hopeful that this time it really will return to its roots.
3. Horizon Zero Dawn
An open-world action RPG is quite a shift for developer Guerilla Games, but Horizon Zero Dawn captured fansí attention from the moment it was first revealed. On February 28 in North America and March 1 in Europe, we’ll finally get to see this unique RPG in action on the PlayStation 4.
Horizon Zero Dawn is set in a post-apocalyptic world where robotic creatures called Machines have taken dominance and forced humanity back into a tribal state. This leads to a fascinating juxtaposition of primitive elements like spears and futuristic elements like robots and vehicles.
It follows a young hunter named Aloy who sets out to learn the truth about the world she lives in, and features open world exploration, ranged and melee combat, a crafting system, stealth elements, and more. Whether you want to unravel the mystery of the world’s condition or just battle robotic dinosaurs, Horizon Zero Dawn is a title to be excited about.
2. Shenmue III
After the release of Shenmue II in 2001, it looked like fans might never see Ryo Hazuki resolve his quest. However, 2017 should be the year we finally get some answers, as Neilo and Ys Net have set a December release window for the long-awaited Shenmue III, planned for the PC and PlayStation 4.
Shenmue III picks up where its predecessor left off, with Ryo on the trail of Lan Di, his father’s murderer, and in the company of a mysterious girl named Ling Shenhua. Specific details about Shenmue III’s gameplay have yet to be revealed, but if it follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, it should be an open-world action-adventure game filled with simulation elements and mini-games alongside brawler combat.
It looks like a beautiful game, and although its 2017 release date isn’t guaranteed, given the scale of the projects, for now Shenmue III is one of the most anticipated games of the year.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Finally, Nintendo will finally release The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in 2017 for the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch, March 31st, 2017.
First announced in 2013, the newest entry in the Legend of Zelda series will break with tradition in many ways, such as having an open world, dungeons that can be played through in any order, breakable weapons, and more. Nevertheless, familiar Zelda gameplay elements will still be present. The story is very mysterious, as Link awakens in a ravaged Hyrule that was destroyed by Calamity Ganon a century earlier. Link sets out to defeat Calamity Ganon and save the world.
The new Legend of Zelda game has been a hotly anticipated title ever since its original announcement. Now that its release is imminent, we feel safe in calling The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild the #1 most anticipated game of 2017.
